Eddie The Eagle Pays a Visit to Chill Factore

SKI-JUMPING ICON Eddie the Eagle took to the slope at Manchester’s Chill Factorto help launch the ski centre’s summer activities.

The former Olympian – real name Michael Edwards - shot to fame in 1988 when he became the first person to represent Great Britain in Winter Olympic ski jumping for 60 years. More recently, Eddie’s remarkable story hit the big screen in the eponymous film.

Eddie did a Q&A with fans, before taking to the 180 metre slope alongside guests. After that, Eddie spent the afternoon taking selfies and signing autographs for the next wave of skiing and snowboarding talent.

Questions from fans including grilling Eddie on the largest jump he had ever undertaken and quizzing him on his pop career, which included reaching number 58 in the UK charts and number 2 in Finland.

After retiring from ski jumping, Eddie has been much in demand!  Eddie went on the become the world number nine in amateur speed skiing, (106.8 mph / 171.9 km/h).  He has released a book called ‘On the Piste’, presented a radio show on Sunday mornings with Trish Campbell on BBC Radio Gloucestershire and in 2003, he graduated from De Montfort University in Leicester with a degree in law.

Eddie continues to work as a commentator for programmes such as ITV’s ‘The Jump’ and has taken part in numerous TV shows ranging from Sport Relief to the celebrity diving show ‘Splash’ which he won.

Morwenna Angove, CEO at Chill Factore, said: “Eddie the Eagle is synonymous with ski jumping, so naturally we were thrilled to welcome him to the slope here at Chill Factore.“Eddie’s story is inspiring and his drive and determination to succeed demonstrates just what can be achieved with hard work.
