How many ski lessons does a beginner need?

If you’re a complete beginner to the slopes, you’re no doubt keen to master those turns and snow ploughs sooner rather than later. So, how long does it take to learn to ski? Here at Chill Factore, we know that everyone picks up skiing up at different speeds. But with our ski lessons, we’ll give you the support and guidance to get you sliding down the slope with confidence in no time! Read on to find out more.

How long does it take to learn to ski?

Some prefer to spread their ski lessons over a few weeks, while others prefer to get it done all in one go. At Chill Factore we believe that as a complete novice to the snow, it can take a little bit of time to get to grips with how skis work and the position your body needs to be in to avoid toppling over.

However, if you’re energetic or rather sporty with a good attitude, then you can generally learn to ski confidently within a few days or after a few hours of lessons. But, to develop strong, technical skiing skills, learning to ski proficiently can take a number of years.

Factors affecting how long it takes to learn to ski

Here at Chill Factore, we’ve come up with a range of reasons that could affect how long it takes you to learn to ski. If you think you tick all of these boxes, then getting into skiing might be much easier than you imagined:

  • Fitness and energy levels - The fitter you are, the easier it is to learn to ski
  • Balance - If you generally have good balance skiing might not be as hard as you imagined!
  • Hand-eye coordination - Like anything, hand-eye coordination helps
  • Being a daredevil - Being less fearful will generally mean that you pick skiing up quicker

How hard is skiing?

Within the first few hours of your ski lesson, you’ll likely be getting to grips with the basics, including: how to walk in skis, how to pop on your ski boots, and how to stop on a shallow gradient. The beginning of your ski lesson will most likely be the hardest, as getting into skiing and the feeling of having two long feet can feel very abnormal. More often than not, it can cause you to cross over your two skis and get into a muddle.

After you’ve mastered the snow plough, which can take some time to get comfortable with, you can begin to get to grips with those snow plough turns. You’ll soon feel like skiing is not as hard as you first thought. With a few more hours of lessons and lots of practice you’ll slowly begin committing to turns and in no time your parallel turns will feel very natural.
